Corrençon (now Corrençon-en-Vercors) is a commune located on the Vercors Plateau. Historically, this municipality has served as a crossroads between the regions to the south and west (Diois, the High Plateaus, and Vercors Drômois) and those to the north (the region known as the Quatre Montagnes). The town separated from Villard-de-Lans and became independent in 1857.
Traditional architecture is evident here: stepped gables topped with limestone slabs.
Although common in many regions of France, this type of construction is typical of the Quatre Montagnes area. The historical purpose of this vertical construction is to protect thatched roofs from strong winds and water infiltration.
The game of boules played here—certainly a descendant of the boules games documented in Europe since the Middle Ages—is characteristic of outdoor group activities.
