Refuge & Resource
The setting for this editorial series is a former quarry in the French Alps, where limestone was quarried from Roman times until the mid-20th century.
Exploited for the quality of its stone – used for sculpture or construction – this quarry reminds us of our dependence on natural resources, our ability to transform nature for our needs and our evolution.
This subterranean space can also evoke the caves –
prehistoric habitats – and the need for protection from a hostile environment. Places of
gathering, of life, of transition – that have sheltered mankind for
hundreds of thousands of years.
This short series is an attempt to pay homage to our Alpine heritage – and also to question our deepest nature: our need for refuge, our dependence on natural resources.
